About Kurt
***Special needs***
Kurt is an 8mo Great Dane x puppy who came to us about 6 months ago scared and injured. He had a severely damaged and deformed front leg and paw which appeared to be an old injury. He was unable to straighten his leg which meant when he tried to use it, he was walking on the end of his toes, one of which was worn down to the bone.
The obvious thing to do at this point would have been to amputate his leg, though with his X-rays showing no obvious bone deformities, we opted to try and save his leg.
After a couple of months of intense physiotherapy, daily laser therapy and fortnightly electrotherapy and Chiropractic visits, he was finally able to place the paw.
Even though the leg is 5cm shorter than the other he uses it well a lot of the time, and at this point there is no need to amputate the leg. This may be required in the future though currently the leg is functional.
Kurt’s paw is deformed from the trauma he went through as a puppy, basically the pads on his paw are at the same level as the skin between them. We have tried to surgically correct this with no luck, so it’s now a case of managing it.
Exercising / playing on rough surfaces such as concrete and pavers causes him to get grazes on the bottom of his paw, to avoid this when walking he happily wears a boot to protect the skin and pads. With time his skin and pads should harden and callus and there may be a time in the future when he doesn’t need to wear a boot, though for now his paw needs to be protected to stop wounds developing.
Kurt is a gorgeous boy who loves running and playing with his foster mums dogs. He is good with cats, toilet trained, crate trained, knows basic obedience, walks well on lead and is good in the car.
He loves cuddles and quite often thinks he is a lap dog.
We can only imagine what Kurt went through as a puppy and as a result of this, he is cautious of new people and with some people he has met, mainly tall men with beards, he was petrified.
Kurt is a pleasure to have in care and although we don’t want to see him go, it’s now time to find him the perfect forever home!
Kurt is looking for someone who will continue his training and to help him build his confidence with new people. His paw will need to be managed with boots whilst walking, and ideally not have a yard with lots of pavers or concrete to help avoid any damage whilst playing.
Kurt is fine on his own though given how much he loves playing with his foster friends and the confidence he gets when he has another doggy companion, we feel it would be beneficial for him to go to a home with another dog.
Kurt hasn’t spent much time with children, though some of the younger kids he has met, he has been frightened of.
Kurt was physically and emotionally damaged as a young puppy and needs someone who understands his fears and can continue to help and support this gorgeous boy through life.
