Angelina - extra special needs
Introducing our very special needs darling Angelina. Angelina is a senior Shih Tzu cross who has had an extremely tough life and is looking for a family to love her and dote on her for the rest of her little life. Plain and simple, this little angel just needs love!
Angelina is quiet and unassuming - her most favourite place in the world is rolling on her back on a plush doggy bed and pumping her legs in the air as her back scratch feels so good! She ambles slowly around the house at a cruisy place occasionally checking out what's going on. She will use the doggy door to wander outside to go to the toilet and will plonk herself down on a comfy outdoor dog bed to chew on her favourite treat – a dentistix chew. She is unsure of grass as she's probably never been exposed to it - so she would suit a family who can teach her that rolling around on the grass can be a lot of fun. She lives with 6 other small dogs and she is fine with them around her - having never been socialised she doesn't know how to play or interact so she mainly just keeps to herself and going with the flow at her own pace. She would enjoy a family who can take her for a very short dawdle each day (to the end of the street and back if it’s a short street) to let her have a sniff and get exposure to the big wide world. Most of the time Angelina just wants to sleep and enjoy a simple quiet life.
Angelina has been used for breeding / puppy farming and up until now has lead the toughest life imaginable. She has never received vet care and has been treated as a money making machine producing puppies for profit - this harsh and loveless life has resulted in severe mammary tumours, tooth loss, swollen limbs, skin sensitivity, loss of hair, aged and weathered skin, a hairless tail and a multitude of other symptoms of neglect.
Angelina's life changed the day she came into care with us. She has undergone surgery to remove large mammary tumours which involved in stitches from the top of her belly to the bottom. She has been on medication and is now on a diet of Holistic (fish based) food to help reduce the swelling in her limbs and control her skin sensitivities. Angelina has thrived in foster care with both her physical and emotional needs being met for the very first time.
Due to years of neglect we are unable to estimate her age – we can only guess at over 10 years. She may have quite a few years to appreciate a quiet life filled with love, or she may only have a short time – it is hard to guess. The special person / family who adopts her will need be prepared to love her for however long she has. Due to the neglect Angelina has suffered her new family will need to have funds available to continue vet care to keep her comfortable for the rest of her life - something that her previous owners refused to do. Her new family will need to keep her on a diet of “Holistic” brand fish based food (available from Petbarn and other large pet supply stores). And most importantly, her new family will also need to have bucket loads of empathy and love to shower her with to make up for lost time!
Angelina is best suited to a quiet home without a lot of noise or people coming and going so that she has peace and quiet. A single older person or couple or a family with quiet teenagers who will give her space would be perfect for her. She will also need a home without stairs as she has a long body and only short little legs so going up and down stairs will be too difficult for her.

Adoption details
(1) The first step is to phone or email the foster carer listed on the pet's profile (scroll to the bottom on the description). They can answer your questions and will ask you about the sort of home you are offering and may ask you to fill in our Adoption Questionnaire http://www.dogrescuenewcastle.com.au/adopt/adoptionquestionnaire.docx
(2) If the questionnaire is approved you can arrange to meet the pet, usually at the foster carer's home or nearby.
(3) If that goes well we will arrange a property check so we can verify that your home and yard are suitable for the pet you've selected. We will ask to see photo ID.
(4) If both sides agree, then you can pay for and adopt your new family member! The two week trial begins on the day of adoption.
