About Jaspa
Jasper is a playful, loyal, fun loving and affectionate ‘goof ball’.
Other dogs
Fine with other dogs - both male and female. He is well socialised.
Cats
Yes. He has previously been fine but as he has not had direct contact in the last few years he would need to be re-introduced with supervision.
Other animals
He would not be suitable unsupervised around farm animals because while he is not overtly aggressive, he will play and cause harm.
Kids
Yes but Jasper might accidentally knock one over. Jaspa is very friendly and loves a homecoming. While he may be a little exuberant initially he does settle down. We recommend primary school kids and older.
Size
Approx 25 kgs
Exercise requirements
Medium. Jasper loves a good walk every day but can cope with an equal amount of playtime at home if you miss a day. He loves to play with other dogs and is currently living with his sister, Tia. They are entertaining to watch in the back yard playing catch and roly-poly. Tia is also available for adoption however, the dogs can be separated.
How is your dog on a lead?
Jasper is used to a halite harness and is usually well behaved.
How is the dog off the lead?
Initially Jasper will go off exploring but is likely to come back eventually - though he might play 'chasie' when you try to get him back on his halti. This will be easier with some training - Jaspa learns quickly.
Escape artist?
Jaspa needs a secure yard. If you persistently ignore him, deprive him of exercise and/or mental stimulation he may try to get out. Normal colour bond fencing right to the bottom should be fine. He may climb mesh or wire fencing.
Nuisance barker?
No
Toilet trained
No, as he has never been inside - but he is smart and can learn quickly.
Tolerance to being alone
''They've never been separated so I don't know how they would be if they were alone during the day", said his carer. Jaspa is more of a follower than a leader so in the right environment he should be well behaved.
Likes
Water and swimming - see attached video. He also loves playing with other dogs and riding in the back of a ute. Jasper loves his food and will eat anything.
Dislikes
Thunder and lightning. Being ignored for long periods of time.
Ideal home
Large yard or even acreage but not a rural property unless you can keep him away from playing with other farm animals. You will need to be an active person and also have experience with the breed so as to continue with his training. Jaspa is smart and hence, needs physical and mental stimulation. Preference will be given to a home that can adopt Jaspa and his sister, Tia. However, they can be separated.
Generally
Jaspa loves to play with other dogs and while he is not overly rough, he can be boisterous initially. He is also very smoochie, loyal and affectionate. Jaspa is also a 'lounger' so will lie quietly next to you for a while. Jaspa groans like an old man if you rub his ears and loves having his back scratched. Both dogs ADORE water and will put their heads right under to retrieve stones and play. They have been to the beach a few times and enjoyed it. Jaspa likes bouncing on the trampoline too. He really is a character who doesn't realise he is a big boy.
If you adopt Jaspa and Tia the adoption fee is reduced by 50%. However, they can be separated.
Adoption details
1) Read the dog's profile
2) Complete the expression of Interest form
http://www.dogadoption.org.au/adoption---expression-of-interest.html
3) Speak to the carer and arrange a meeting
4) House assessment is completed
5) Adoption is completed with a minimum 2 week cooling off period (similar to a trial but with legal protection)
We strongly recommend you read the dogs' profile carefully as everything we know about the dog/s is listed.
If you are interested in a dog we invite you to submit an application form so we can learn more about your circumstances. This is to ensure we match the right dog to the best home. (one form per family - not per dog) http://www.dogadoption.org.au/adoption---expression-of-interest.html
This is for the benefit of both the dog and the potential new owner/s. It also saves time and uses limited resources more effectively.
Once the essential criteria is confirmed we put you in touch with the carer for a more detailed chat with a view of meeting the dog/s.
If you decide to proceed with the adoption we make a time for a house check.
The adoption fee is then paid (there is a 2 week cooling off period.) Please note we do not usually allow trials.
Foster carers are also able to adopt foster dogs once approved.
