About Skipper (On Trial 6/5/14)
Skipper is a male, 4yo purebred Fox Terrier (smooth coat). He loves being with people and is good with children. He is a relaxed and happy dog and not hyperactive. He likes a morning walk and then will just keep you company throughout the day or enjoy the sunshine outside without being a pest. He will be in heaven if you pay attention to him and rub his belly or his ears.
He loves the water! His favourite game is biting at the water from the hose. He enjoys relaxing with something to chew such as bones, pig's ear, or a stuffed Kong toy. He is past the puppy stage so doesn't chew anything else. He's not a barker, and will only bark when there is something noisy happening outside such as screaming kids or skateboards.
Skippy loves being inside with his people! He is fine outside when no one is home during the day but needs to be inside with his family when anyone is home. He's no trouble indoors. He will just lie on his bed in the same room with you. He is housetrained. He's a very good boy at night. He sleeps on a dog bed in a spare bedroom and you never hear a peep out of him, and no accidents. In cooler weather we put a coat on him. He needs to be allowed to sleep inside in his forever home.
Skipper is a very handsome boy. He has the classic, triangular head and long nose of a Fox Terrier. He has a soft, short coat and doesn't shed very much. He is small to medium sized. He weighs about 16kgs but he should probably be closer 12kgs.
Skipper is very healthy except for being overweight. He was checked by our vet and had a blood test to check his thyroid and it came back normal. So his weight is just caused by overfeeding. So now Skipper is on a low fat, low carb diet. He gets 2 small meals a day consisting of vegetables and lean meat.
Skipper responds very well to clicker training and is easy to train. He's a smart boy and eager to earn food rewards. I taught him how to sit on request in just a couple of minutes. He sits and waits for his meals. I am teaching him how to walk nicely on lead and he is doing very well.
Skippy was living with another small dog before he came to DRN. He is fine with my other two small dogs. Skippy could be an only dog or he would be happy to live with another friendly dog. Skipper was friendly with all the dogs we met at the dog park and wanted to swim and play with them.
He will chase wild birds so I think he will chase cats and other small pets such as rabbits and guinea pigs too, so he's not suitable to living with them. He's great in the car. I just tether him in the back seat and he lies down to enjoy the ride.
Skipper was surrendered to Dog Rescue Newcastle by his owners who could no longer look after him. Other than being overweight he was in good condition and is a happy, normal dog. His ideal home will be one where he will be allowed inside and welcome as part of the family and given some love and attention. He has a sweet and loving temperament and will add lots of smiles and affection to your home.
For more information or to meet Skipper, please contact Tessa on 02-4944-7053 or email dogrescuenewcastle@gmail.com. Skipper is in foster care in Charlestown, NSW (Lake Macquarie, south of Newcastle).
Skipper's $400 adoption fee includes his desexing, vaccinations, flea and worm treatments, microchipping, and lifetime registration. You can see all our available dogs at www.dogrescuenewcastle.com.au
Medical notes
Checked by our vet and is healthy, though overweight.
He has pink skin on his stomach which is prone to sunburn. He should have a shady area outside and when he will be in the sun such as on walks he needs sunscreen applied to his tummy. Any waterproof sunscreen is fine and he enjoys the belly rub.
Adoption details
(1) The first step is to phone (preferred) or email the foster carer listed on the pet's profile (scroll to the bottom on the description). They can tell you all about the pet. They will also ask you about what sort of home you are offering in order to assess if it is a good match.
(2) Arrange to meet the pet, usually at the foster carers home or nearby.
(3) If that goes well we will arrange a property check so we can verify that your home and yard are suitable for the pet you've selected. They will ask to see photo ID.
(4) If both sides agree, then you can pay for and adopt your new family member! The two week trial begins on the day of adoption.
