About Iris & Beans
Iris and Beans are a unique pair of rats who have found comfort and companionship in each other after coming into rescue from very different places. Beans, the black rat, is a desexed male. Beans is very inquisitive but definitely the calmer of the two. Iris, the light coloured rat, is a female. She is actually the one who is full of beans -- she is always up to something! You'll quickly fall in love with Beans' charming face and Iris' funky ears.
These two are looking for a home where they can express their full (very different!) personalities and where they'll be truly treasured. Like most rats, Iris and Beans are clever, intelligent animals who love to explore new cage lay outs, especially climbing toys and hammocks. They are adept problem solvers and you'll never get bored with these two to observe. Provide them with a spacious cage filled with toys, and you'll get endless amusement in return!
Iris and Beans would prefer a home with teenagers or adults only, and are best suited to a rat-experienced home. Like most rats, they're not fond of cuddles, but with time and patience, they will certainly grow to trust you. These two are very friendly, and are always happy to come to the cage door for treats. If you have cat or dog family members, please put thought into how you will keep them safely away from the cage.
If you're looking to bring a pre-bonded pair of rats into your home and think that you can keep them happy and entertained for the rest of their lives (<1.5 years), please send us an enquiry and we'll get back to you as soon as possible and get these lovely gals into their forever home. Homes with other female or desexed male rats are very welcome to apply to add these two to their existing group.
Iris and Beans will be treated with a parasite preventative prior to adoption. Iris recently had quite a significant tumour removal, so she will likely retain some scarring. Like most rats, these two have had minor bouts of respiratory disease which will likely require treatment again in their lifetime.
Medical notes
Beans (the male) is desexed. Iris (the female) has had a significant tumour removal, and will likely retain some scarring. She is also missing parts of her ears, which is purely cosmetic and causes her no ill effects. As with all entire female rats, there is a risk that she may develop another tumour at any point, however this particular tumour shows no signs of returning. Both rats have been treated for respiratory issues before. Perspective adopters must consider that these two will almost certainly require treatment again in the future. More information available to interested parties.
Adoption details
All of our animals are seeking indoor only homes. We do not adopt out any animal to live alone (excluding entire male mice). If you do not have one or more compatible animals of the same species, you must adopt a bonded pair or group.
Once you apply to adopt, we'll talk with you about proper care of the animals you're looking to adopt, discuss any concerns you or we might have, and tell you more about our available animals. Using the application form on our website will ensure that you don't leave anything out.
Otherwise, please include as much detail as possible about your situation, other animals, experience with the species you're looking to adopt, and intended housing/diet when you apply. If there's a particular vet clinic you intend to use, please tell us the name (otherwise we can help you locate one that is knowledgable in small animals).
As part of the adoption process we require photos of a complete, suitable set up. We suggest contacting us prior to buying any cages or items for your new family members as many sold for small animals are not appropriate. We've also outlined our housing expectations on our social media, but don't be intimidated! We are here to help, not judge.
At the time of adoption, you'll be asked to pay an adoption fee and sign an adoption form. You'll receive an adoption packet including a detailed care guide for the species you've adopted, an adoption certificate, and any relevant veterinary records (proof of vaccination and sterilisation, microchip details, etc).
