About Moose & River
This unusual pair found friendship in each other despite coming from completely different walks of life!
Sweet River is a young Jersey x Friesian who was aptly named after the way she came to us! We were in contact with someone who had suddenly found a cow on their horse property and it was discovered that she had swum across a river from the neighbouring cattle property!
River was very shy and unsure but we made quick work of catching her and brought her safely home where we soon discovered that she had very poor eyesight. This is likely how she found herself in a river to begin with!
She has since grown into a stunning girl, finding confidence in the happy bovines around her although due to her eyesight, she can startle easily and needs a kind and patient home with safe fencing and relatively safe terrain.
Moose is an endearing little Angus steer who was surrendered due to his differences making his previous humans take pity and decide not to send him on the scary truck with the others!
Moose was born with crooked calf syndrome, caused by nutritional imbalances in his mum while pregnant. While most of his skeletal crookedness is mild, the most obvious deformity is his cleft palate. He has coped significantly well with his cleft however his new home must provide him with lengthy grass or ad lib hay so he can maintain weight. Short grass is difficult for Moose to graze due to the shape of his mouth so please consider the quality of your grazing before applying. Due to his slight crookedness, Moose would also benefit from being in a paddock with safe terrain making him and River the perfect companions in a new home together.
Both buddies are up to date with vaccinations, worming, lice treatment and Moose is also castrated.
Medical notes
River - poor eyesight. We know she can see some movement but the extent of her eyesight is unknown. There is nothing to suggest any further investigation is required for her eyesight.
Moose - crooked calf syndrome. His main issue is his cleft palate, meaning quality feed needs to be available to him at all times.
Both cows will need safe fencing and paddocks without too many obstacles/holes/steep hills.
Adoption details
Regardless of the breed of animal you are looking to adopt, our adoption process is the same.
The first step of the process involves submitting an adoption application form. The form helps us understand a little bit more about you and your household and is used to figure out whether animal is the right fit for your household and what you are looking for, and also if your household is the right fit for the animal.
After a review process, shortlisted applicants will be contacted by one of our volunteer adoption coordinators usually by phone call or message. This is an informal conversation to discuss any questions we may have about the application and re-confirm any information provided. It is usually at at this point that we will organise a Meet & Greet with you and the animal.
It is a Strong Heart’s adoption policy to arrange a Meet & Greet with the prospective family and the animal before finalising the adoption. The Meet & Greet will allow the opportunity to visit the animal and have a pat and a play with them. The foster carer will tell you a bit about the animal's personality and what they have been like for the time they’ve been in their care. It is a great opportunity to ask the carer about the animals food, sleeping and any other health requirements.
If the Meet & Greet goes well on the day, in most cases you will be able to take the animal home straight away after payment of the adoption fee. All necessary paperwork including vet work history and transfer of ownership information will be sent via email within a few days unless otherwise specified.
