In 2014, PetRescue celebrated its 10-year anniversary and its achievements to date. We were thrilled that 98% of all Australia’s rescue groups and shelters had embraced PetRescue as a way of promoting their pets for free. But disappointed to see less than 2% of Australia’s pounds had come on board. That’s a sad state of affairs, considering 56% of pound cats and 25% of pound dogs are killed every year because homes aren't found for them.
PetRescue’s Safe & Sound Pounds Project aims to change that. And since launching the crowdfunding campaign in late November 2014, we’ve already had a few proactive pounds come on board to list their pets before the first guidebook even hit the printing press!
Thanks to your generous support last Christmas, we raised enough funds to launch the Safe & Sound Pounds project and have just released the first in a series of guidebooks to every pound across the country. This first publication gives Australia’s pound staff the basic tools they need to implement effective life-saving adoption programs and help animals throughout the impoundment journey.
Safe & Sound Pounds will be PetRescue’s major campaign for the duration of 2015/16 and its mission is a bold one.
To get every single pet who needs a home listed on the PetRescue website, and create a future where no pet is ever at risk of being killed at the pound due to homelessness.
Since releasing Guidebook 1 in June 2015, we have already received enquiries from a handful of pounds who are keen to start listing their pets on PetRescue. And we’re starting to follow up with all the remaining pounds. But we know change won’t happen overnight, and here’s our next plan of action.
Over the coming months, the release of Guidebook 2 will engage and empower the pet-loving public. In this edition we reveal the inconvenient truths about our failing pound system, the proven solutions to saving lives, and the essential tools all pet lovers need to start applying pressure for change in their local communities.
To encourage compassion for one of the most vilified animals in Australia, the 'cat', Guidebook 3 will be a guide for community cat carers, giving a local perspective on human cat management programs that are currently in existence and desperately needed in every community.
Many of our rescue group members are overburdened and under pressure from pounds to rescue pets at risk of being killed at the end of their holding period. Guidebook 4 will be an empowering tool for all rescue groups, showing them how to forge effective and sustainable relationships with their local pound by encouraging pounds to invest in their own treatment and rehoming programs, rather than simply outsourcing these responsibilities to local rescue groups.
These four guides will become the centrepiece of our life-saving mission and strategy, which includes monthly emails, social media and direct outreach to rescue groups and pounds.
Safe & Sound Pounds Report 2016
The final document will be released at the end of 2016, providing a full report on the overall effectiveness of the Safe & Sound Pounds project to date, and presenting a strategy for the ongoing development of PetRescue and its associated programs.
