Because of their distinct shape (and often colour), it’s easy to get confused between Llamas and Alpacas. They both belong to the same camel family “Camildae” and have two other distant cousins ‘Vicuña’ and ‘Guanaco’. While they’re both adorable, it’s easy to mistake one for the other. But not anymore! We did some sleuthing to see how you can tell them apart:

👂 Ears
While alpacas have short pointy ears, llama ears are slightly longer and banana-shaped.

😀 Face
Llamas tend to have longer pointy snouts, almost resembling a camel or even a kangaroo, whereas alpacas have short stubby faces covered in fuzz and a very fashionable fringe!
📏 Size
While they may look about the same from a distance, if you really get into specifics, llamas are often much bigger in size and grow up to 6ft.

🦙 Bodies
Llamas have long flatter backs whereas alpacas tend to have shorter curvier backs.
Do they both spit? 🤔
Yes! While llamas and alpacas are notorious for sharing a little more of their DNA than expected, it is rarely directed at humans. There are several reasons why they might be inclined to spit including self-defence, or when they are competing for food.
Did you know Alpacas also make good pets?

Alpacas are intelligent and curious creatures. If treated well, you can eventually earn their trust. With sufficient resources and space, they can be happy, especially if they have a herd or few other friends to spend their days with!
Alpacas, horses, and all other kinds of pets are available for adoption on PetRescue! Find pets here.
