Marilyn *** Has Had Quite A Journey *** - large female mastiff cross dog

Picture of Marilyn *** Has Had Quite A Journey ***Marilyn is a 16 month old mastiff cross with quite a story. She was terribly neglected then thrown onto a busy road. When DRN rescued her she had severe mange and was very thin. Despite all this, her placid and loving nature was still shining through. We had a raffle and a fundraising Day for Marilyn to help pay for her vet treatment. Now, Marilyn is healthy, active and ready to be adopted into a loving, forever home. . .

Marilyn weighs 27kg. She has a truly beautiful nature and rarely barks. She loves investigating the world, but will also happily sit with you and watch the world go by. She's a wonderful companion. . .

She enjoys meeting all people. She's happy to receive lots of cuddles, and will communicate with gentle touches of her nose against your hand or leg, or, if you let her, she will nuzzle her nose to your ear in her version of a kiss. It's easy to tell when Marilyn is really happy, because her tail wags so far side to side that the white tip brushes against either side of her body. . .

She currently lives with another dog and enjoys their play times together very much. Sometimes it's a good game of chase, other times its a game with a tug-rope or a football. She also likes to meet other dogs when she is out, and is generally gentle. . .

Marilyn is inquisitive, including all animals other than dogs. We don't know how she would be with a cat, but we do know that she likes to chase birds and rabbits if given the chance. . .

At home during the day, Marilyn happily goes in and out as she chooses. She loves to sit outside in the morning and soak up the rays, but will often want to come inside where its cooler once the day warms up. She is used to sleeping indoors at night. She is housetrained. Although she has her own bed, she likes to snuggle up to her companion foster dog to sleep when she has the opportunity.

Marilyn currently enjoys running and playing off-leash for a half hour every morning, and an on-leash walk each afternoon. She is learning to swim and enjoys car rides.

Marilyn is very good at keeping us in sight and not wandering too far away when she is off-leash, and she will come when called. Marilyn knows several command words, including “Uh-uh”, “Come Here”, “This Way”, “Sit”, “Off”, “Inside”, “Outside”, “Leave It”, and “Gently”. She communicates mostly by touch and with her very expressive eyes. She rarely barks, and has only recently started to alert us to someone approaching the property.

Marilyn is not used to being on her own, when we're not home, she has always another other dog for company. Her ideal home would be one where she will enjoy daily off-leash exercise and an on-lead walk; where she will not be without human or canine company for more than four hours a day, and where she will be included in her new family's life as much as possible.

Marilyn is a real delight, and she seems to bring everyone a smile when she goes up to greet them. She's friendly and affectionate and just a pleasure to have around. The more we have got to know her, the more we have fallen in love with her.

Medical Notes

Marilyn had a bad case of mange when she first came into foster care, but has made a truly amazing recovery. She is now on a once-daily, easily-given, dose of liquid medication “Ivomec” that she has with her breakfast. Her current maintenance care also includes a once-weekly bath with a medicated shampoo, followed by a medicated leave-in conditioner, and a once-weekly ear wash with Clear Ear Solution.

On the advice of her vet, Marilyn eats Hills Prescription z/d Canine Ultra Allergen-Free kibble twice a day. She also loves raw bones, and all sorts of treats. Her ideal weight is betwee 25 kg and 26kgs.

Marilyn is a large dog, so to help reduce the possiblity of any future issues with her hips, she shouldn't be encouraged to do a lot of jumping.
