Letter from the Editor
Welcome to the first edition of the PetRescue Newsletter!

We're very excited to be up and running and have been overwhelmed by the level of support we've received. Thank you to everyone who wrote to us with feedback and suggestions for the site.

We've had support from the media (see our Sydney Morning Herald and The Age feature below) and we've also received a large product donation from Bayer Australia. It's really great to have this level of support, as it helps us spread the word about animal rescue and adoption.

With a lot of new marketing ideas in progress, the next few months are going to be very exciting for us here at PetRescue - read on to find out about some of the projects coming up!

Cheers,
Michelle Williamson

Fetching the Newspaper

On Saturday the 2nd of October, PetRescue featured in the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age newspapers, both online and in the print versions. This has caused a huge boost in traffic to the site, and has generated many animal enquiries to our office.

We'd like to thank the Icon staff for including us, and also for their personal words of support. Cheers guys!

Bayer's Huge Donation

PetRescue was delighted to receive a call from Bayer Australia, who have offered to donate 10,000 packets of Advantage for distribution to PetRescue shelter members.

We would like to thank Bayer for their generous contribution, and we'll be in touch with our members soon to arrange delivery.

Find a Cat With Your Mouse!

PetRescue is pleased to announce that we are now supporting cat rescue by including a cat listing and adoption area.

Visitors to the site are now able to search for kittens or cats and view detailed information about them, including photos, descriptions and adoption details.

In line with our rescue mission, only desexed cats are able to be listed and they are subject to the same moderation systems as dogs listed on PetRescue.

Rescuers will find a new option in the Members Area to list the cats they have available for adoption.

As always, we're very interested in hearing your thoughts and would appreciate any feedback.

Feature Case - Patches

This little guy is only about 9 or 10 weeks old and in his short life he has already been through quite an ordeal.

At some time, his right front leg has been broken and apparently it has never been treated. This has resulted in a terrible deformity that has caused quite a marked difference in the length of his leg. This deformity will lead to all sorts of problems as he grows.

As well as having this huge problem, Patches also found himself in a big cold cage at the pound, waiting day by day for his number to come up and to be sent off to death row.

He has since been rescued from the pound by Paws n Hooves and a lovely family fell in love with and adopted him. Now all they want is to share their love and their home with him.

This all sounds like a really great and happy story but unfortunately at this stage there is no happy ending.

To correct Patches' leg deformity, he needs to have surgery as soon as possible while he is still growing. This surgery is going to cost upwards of $1,000 and this will be a huge drain on Paws n Hooves resources.

PetRescue would like to help raise some of the much needed funds to get the poor little guy back on the road to recovery.

If you are interested in contributing to help Patches, please contact Paws n Hooves on 02 9627 2767 or email pawsnhooves@iprimus.com.au.

Pets in Need

In each PetRescue Update, we feature some of the animals that have been listed on PetRescue for some time, and are still in need of a home.

Saxon (NSW)
Large male Staffordshire Bull Terrier X dog

Saxon has a great personality. He gets on well with other dogs and absolutely adores his people. He will need a home with good, high fences as he is capable of jumping pretty high.

Buzz (VIC)
Large male German Shepherd dog

Buzz is a lovely 10 month old male German Shepherd who would be suitable for a home where he can do some work - obedience, agility, tracking etc or just lots of exercise. Buzz is a little shy with new people but has no aggression or malice in him at all. He is suitable to go to a home with older kids - 8 and up and would make a wonderful companion for a family, a single person, an older retired couple, etc. Buzz is crate trained and comes with a crate.

Sandy (NSW)
Large male Shephard x Labrador dog

Sandy is a happy, goofy boy. He is learning basic obedience and will sit for his dinner. He is very friendly and great with other dogs. Sandy needs to be allowed inside with the family when they are home. He is still a puppy at heart and is not always aware of his large size, but he is learning and is eager to please.

Joe (NSW)
Small male Corgi x Jack Russell x Cattle dog

Joe is a quirky little boy who deserves his own family that can dote over him day and night. He best suits a family who do not have very young children. Joe is ok with other dogs his own size, but is not comfortable around dominant dogs and cats. If you are looking for a new door bell, then Joe is the guy for you!

Chester #0234 (SA)
Medium male Koolie X dog

I am a gentle shy Koolie X and try to hide at the back of my kennel when strangers come by. This make it hard for me to find the right home. Once I get to know you I am very affectionate and just love company. Being a working dog I am active and just love to run. I'm also very intelligent and learn really quickly.

Bobby
Small male Shih Tzu x dog

Bobby had been with us for a fair while and we couldn't understand why no-one had taken him home. Well this week, EVERYBODY wanted Bobby, from Queensland to Victoria. His new Mum & Dad are so happy that they "beat everyone to him" and he is living a life of luxury.

After CoCo appeared on PetRescue, she became a very popular little dog. She has now gone to a wonderful new home where she will live the pampered life she deserves.

Staff Profile

Name: Ajax
Title: Dinner Auditor and Head Snorer
How long have you been with PetRescue? Almost two years

What does your role involve?
Originally, I joined the team here at PetRescue to provide companionship to my sister Sophie, but my role has evolved considerably since then. My main task is to monitor our dinner schedule meticulously, and advise the relevant team members as soon as it's feeding time. I also hold a very impressive record for snoring while awake and asleep, which has earnt me the title of Head Snorer.

What do you enjoy most about your job?
I really like barking maniacally at anyone that dares to walk within 100 metres of our front yard. I also enjoy snuggles on any inviting lap, and hiding under the fishtank.

Final Thought
Dear Mum and Dad,

I died today.

You got tired of and took me to the shelter. They were overcrowded and I drew an unlucky number. I am in a plastic bag in a landfill now.

Some other puppy will get the barely used leash you left. My collar was dirty and too small. But the lady took it off before she sent me to black room.

Would I still be at home if I hadn't chewed your shoe? I didn't know what it was, but it was leather, and it was on the floor. I was just playing. You forgot to get puppy toys.

Would I still be at home if I had been house broken? Rubbing my nose in what I did only made me ashamed that I had to go at all. There are books and obedience teachers that would have taught you how to teach me to go to the door.

Would I still be at home if I hadn't barked? I was only saying "I'm scared, I'm lonely", and "I'm here, I'm here! I want to be your best friend."

Would I still be at home if you had taken the time to care for me and to teach manners to me? You didn't pay attention to me after the first week or so, but I spent all my time waiting for you to love me. I died today.

I still love you,

Your Puppy
