More information about alex (Gold Coast Guinea Pig Rescue)

Gold Coast Guinea Pig Rescue is a non-funded, non-profit organisation run by founder Alex Winterford. It began as a small shelter in late 2005 but sometimes has as many as 155 guinea pigs in residence at any one time. The shelter takes in surrendered and rescued guinea pigs and ensures all are in good health before placing them for adoption. All piggies who come to shelter have a home for life but every attempt is made to place them in loving forever homes. The shelter runs an early age desexing program which sees most of our babies desexed at around three weeks of age. We also desex as many adult males as possible in order to give them a better quality of life. Most of these boys have proven to be unfriendly towards all other males so their only hope of having a piggy companion is to be desexed. We are totally against using guinea pigs for breeding, and believe guinea pigs, (indeed all animals), should not be sold in pet shops.
