The Maryborough and District Animal Refuge Society, Bright Street, Maryborough, Qld., is community owned and run. The objectives of the Maryborough and District Animal Refuge Society are: To prevent cruelty to animals as far as possible. To assist in any way possible the enforcement of existing laws relating to the protection of animals from cruelty. To find homes for stray and unwanted animals. The Refuge Manager Helene, is helped by the Assistant Manager Kim and they are responsible for the overall management of the Refuge. There is a caretaker that resides on the premises. All other staff at the Refuge are volunteers from Community Services, TESS, Work for the dole scheme and Wide Bay Volunteers. Other members of the community, independent of any organisation, also donate their time to assist in the running of the refuge. Some of these members place themselves on an unofficial roster, to clean the cattery and kennels, medicate the animals, walk and bath the dogs, assist in the feeding and the upkeep of mowing and gardening etc. The committee members of the Refuge are also volunteers. Remember, desexing your pet is the first step in the war against unwanted pets and cruelty. If you adopt an animal and don't have it desexed, you are not helping the problem, you are adding to it!
