This is our gorgeous Basenji mix Jaffa. We love her so much and having her around means you’ll be very entertained! She is young and has energy to burn! Expect to get out every day for a huge walk for hours with this little girl! When she’s not in his hyper mode, Jaffa is a cuddle bug. She’ll spend all day chasing you around and all night on the couch snuggling. She wants to be friends with everyone and she’ll do very well with an active, social family. She’s young, cheeky and fairly untrained at this stage of life and needs the time put in.
EXERCISE: This girl could go all day! Gets the zoomies every day around sunset, even after walks that add up to 10km+ during the day. Jaffa loves chasing toys up and down the hallway and will keep you going all day. She’s a heavy chewer and can destroy a tennis ball in a few hours, we would definitely recommend heavy chew toys to get the chewing instinct satisfied.
TRAINING: More training definitely needed. Jaffa is house trained, will come and lick you if she needs to go out at night. Pretty much no indoor accidents after the first few days, indicating she’s a fast learner. The Basenji in her means she is a smart dog but she needs the time put in.
Definitely shows signs of previous abuse, flinching and worried wagging. She needs continuing reinforcement on not jumping on people, especially while you're sitting at the table, and he does chew on or steal shoes or wooden furniture like chair/table legs.
CHILDREN: While seems to adore kids and really wants to be around them, she can get nippy when excited so we are looking for a home with no kids.
OTHER DOGS: Jaffa would enjoy another high energy/playful dog of the same size or larger; she had a wonderful time playing around with a couple of lab crosses of a similar age at the park. A slightly older dog that can be a mentor in good dog behaviour should also work well. Not suggested to rehome with any elderly or very small dogs, as she doesn't know her own strength.
CATS: No cats. No birds either, she has gone into a hunter's pointing stance on seeing birds and cats during walks.
ON LEASH: Jaffa is strong. She needs lead training. She can get over excited and pulls while on the lead, and she is STRONG. 18 kilos of solid muscle. This is a work in progress and will be a requirement that it is continued in his new home. A few times she’s shown an urge to chase after cars, while walking along the main road. She needs to be closely monitored and off leash activities are currently a big no go.
BEHAVIOURAL: Jaffa can sometimes get over excited, to the point of jumping up and nibbling on you. Needs to have things to do, or she’ll get bored and get into mischief (chewing, digging). Has destroyed several dog beds/rugs on days of very low activity and high boredom. She is house trained!
Loves attention and affection and is rather licky at times.
Jaffa is an absolute pleasure most of the time, but definitely needs a more active and sociable lifestyle. She does well in the car and would benefit from being a major part of the family with all activities.
NEEDS & REQUIREMENTS: Please read her specific needs here summed up and answer to yourself if you think you can meet her requirements as an adopter before you apply:
