About Sumo
Please note: enquires sent by the enquiry button may be in missed in our main inbox. Please fill out the form in the link below if you are interested in seriously adopting Sumo.
———————————————-
Sumo is a 3 year old French Bulldog.
Sumo is looking for a loving, patient, older family that will give him all the love and attention he craves, while also enforcing rules and boundries, will maintain his ongoing training and establish a consistent routine to ensure he thrives in all his day to day activies for a stable and happy life.
This guy has the potential to be a terrific companion. He has play drive, is food motivated and receptive to training. However, the biggest challenge for Sumo is managing his separation anxiety. For Sumo his separation anxietytakes the form of pacing, scratching franticly at doors, low guttural howling, attempting to follow and get to his people, loss of appetite and an inability to relax.
Sumo has been to see a behavioural vet for his separation anxiety. He is currently trialling medication and we are continuously working on his confidence building training. This will need to be continued by his adopters.
Despite his anxieties, Sumo is an affectionate and well behaved companion, and will generally obey all directions he understands, and with encouragement, will try to offer those he is still learning. Sumo is still working on his loose leash walking.
Sumo is house trained and crate trained. For Sumo this means his crate is a safe and happy place for night time sleeping and to relax in during the day - provided it is within close range of his people.
While in care Sumo has lived with and without other dogs, and also lived with another dog in his previous life. When living with other dogs he did display behaviours leaning towards resource guarding. Sumo has demonstarted to us, that he is his happiest when he is an only dog.
Sumo has previously lived with cats, and has met some new cats when he first came into care. With proper introductions and management Sumo could be welcomed into a cat home
As a short nosed dog Sumo will require access to adequate shade and water when ever outdoors in the warmer months, with exercise limited to the cooler hours of the day and puzzles and enrichment activites offered for stimulation when it is too hot to exercise.
Given Sumo's attachment to his foster carers and a previously unsuccessful adoption, he will require a very dedicated local family that are willing and prepared to invest the time into a long handover process to build the trust and confidence neceesary to set Sumo up for success. His new family will need to be aware that they will be responsible for and committed to his daily enrichment, ongoing training and will find benefit from engaging with a behavioural trainer to help manage Sumo's separation anxiety.
Despite his behavioural issues, Sumo is a fantastic dog andwill be a terrific addition to any family that has the dedication that Sumo requires to thrive in his true 4lyfe home.
