About Bumpa
PLEASE NOTE THAT UNFORTUNATELY WE ARE UNABLE TO FLY OUR ANIMALS EITHER WITHIN WA OR INTERSTATE
NAME: Bumpa
BEFORE SAFE ESPERANCE: Came to us from the local pound.
BREED: Shar-Pei X American Staffordshire Terrier
General breed traits: American Staffordshire Terriers are quite high energy, playful, affectionate and intelligent but do require training as they can be headstrong. They are very social with adults and children and are extremely loyal but can suffer from separation anxiety if left for long periods. Their sociability with dogs is a facet that needs work from an early age.
Shar Pei: originally bred to guard, hunt, herd and fight the Shar Pei is now a companion dog. A calm, independent thinker, sometimes aloof, he is a good watch and guard dog and devoted to his family. Early training is essential to counter his stubborn strong will and socialisation with humans and dogs must begin early. Due to his short nose he is prone to overheating so needs to be an inside dog.
ASSETS: Affectionate, devoted, eager to please, friendly, sensitive, and a complete sweetheart!
FAVOURITE THINGS: Bumpa loves to be loved! He's an extremely affectionate boy who will happily follow you wherever you go. He also loves to play ball and run on the beach. He was scared of going in the car initially but is now getting used to it and jumps in without assistance. He likes to chew on his toys and will happily run around with the other dogs in his foster home.
OTHER ANIMALS: He gets on well with other friendly dogs generally but is a bit unsure of entire male dogs. He is currently living with 2 Greyhounds in his foster home and is very friendly and submissive with them both. When walking on lead he does get quite excited when he sees an unknown dog so he will require continued exposure and work in this area. He has shown some interest in the cats at his foster home so we would not recommend a home with other small species.
GENERAL INFO: Bumpa didn't get the best start in life but has the potential to be a most wonderful, devoted companion. His confidence has grown considerably while in care - he now loves to go out in the car, to the beach, and will greet visitors at the gate with a very waggy tail.. Bumpa does need work on his lead training and commands but he is bright and learns quickly - he just loves to please and he has a very cute head tilt when you talk to him. Bumpa has previously lived with small female dogs - he doesn't like to be alone so would do best with another medium sized female dog or with someone who works from home/is home for most of the day and can take him with them. Bumpa can be possessive around high value food so would need to be fed separately from other pets. He is sensitive to grains so is on a grain free diet. Bumpa is a total cuddle monster and wants to be the centre of your world - he can be pushy if you are giving attention to another canine in the home.
HOME ESSENTIALS:
*Stability: A home where someone is home for most of the day on a permanent basis (not just through Covid 19) or can take him with them when they go out. Due to his shaky start we will only rehome him with children who are 10+.
*Time: Bumpa needs an owner who will put in the time to expose him to new experiences and to train and socialise him with new people as well as dogs. Structured classes where he can learn, socialise and have safe exposure are a must and 2 good walks a day will keep him really happy.
*Space: Bumpa needs a well fenced, secure yard to run around in to burn off his energy, with some grass and interesting things for him to sniff - Bumpa loves to sniff!
*Love: Bumpa needs to be allowed to be inside or out as he chooses, and to be included as part of the family. He is never happier than when he is close to you and involved in your day. He MUST sleep inside.
If Bumpa sounds like the perfect boy for you, please send an enquiry and we'll be in touch soon.
