About Affectionate Bear!
Our handsome Goldie, Bear, is searching for his furever home! This 8 year old guy is just a delight to have around & just luvs his hoomans! While Bear has lost weight whilst in our care, he is currently 40.8kg, & still has 3-4kgs to lose as per Vet advice.
Bear has recently undergone a procedure to remove 3 lumps, two on his spine, which were benign, & 1 large lump on his side. This lump was a low grade Mast Cell Tumour which our Vets have removed. Whilst there is no guarantee that any dog will not present with cancer at some time in their life, we are confident that he is doing great!
Bear just luvs his hoomans & fur brothers & likes to play with toys in the garden, which he does share. He is walked twice a day, 30 minutes each time & thoroughly enjoys getting out & about to the park and surrounds! Bear can sometimes (but not always) be reactive & lunge when another dog walks past. His carers are continually getting Bear to sit, wait and focus on them, until the dog has past, then Bear can move on. Bear is strong on lead, especially when walking with other dogs, he does like to be up front! Bear does listen to commands, & his training is a work in progress, which we expect his furever family will continue to provide with compassion & understanding. Bear luvs his beach visits on his long lead. Bear sleeps inside every night & is house trained.
Bear does not like other dogs too close to his face, or in his “space”. He is still learning the signs of understanding “warning” signs from other dogs to stay away. Bear has not been tested with cats.
Bear likes to have a bath, but can be hesitant when first getting in. He loves a brush, but like most dogs, is a little sensitive around the back end so brushing there needs to be gentle & slow. Bear is a slow eater & loves his top quality food!
Bear is storm phobic. He has his own Thundershirt & we have prescribed medication, however this needs to be administered a couple of hours before a thunderstorm, otherwise it is not effective.
Bear rarely barks, but has a whimper/cry when he wants your attention for something. He is also a noisy “dreamer” while asleep! Bear is a beautiful natured Goldie who thoroughly enjoys attention.
WHAT DOES BEAR NEED?
Bear needs a confident owner who will put the time in to training & continually socialising him. Bear cannot be left in the back yard with no training at all. Bear will be included in all aspect of his family’s life.
Bear’s owner will be confident walking him due to his strength, & will treat him with kindness and compassion while continuing to train using positive reinforcement techniques.
Bear would suit a family environment with another doggie who enjoys sharing toys & daily walks, or even twice a day, as Bear loves getting out and about, exercise & stimulation is definitely to key for Bear’s happiness and wellbeing! We are looking for a family that will continue with Bear’s weight loss regime. Bear has enjoyed hooman company in his past life & we would like that to continue, so our Committee will look favourably at a family where either one member is home a lot, or perhaps a retired couple who can spend their days with Bear! Bear would not suit a family with young children.
Bear has been desexed, vaccinated, microchipped, heartwormed & intestinal wormed, flea & tick treated, & his adoption fee is $550 each. Bear is available for adoption in Brisbane, Sunshine Coast & Hervey Bay only. Please note we do not adopt interstate or overseas.
Bear is being fostered in Brisbane. Part of our adoption process is to have our dogs meet your dog & your family, after our Committee have approved an application. Meet& Greets will take place where our dogs are being fostered, if an application is approved as as suitable.
Please see below on how to apply for Bear if you feel he is a suitable match to your family.
Medical notes
Bear has just had three lumps removed in October 2020 since coming into our care. Two on his spine were benign. One on his side is described as a low grade Mast Cell Tumour. Our Vets have taken huge margins and we feel that he is doing great!
