About Hamlet
I came to the shelter quite sick and needed surgey to fix my eyes and jaw. I never let this change who I am as I am still super energetic and love to play! If you pick me up I will most likely try jump down so I can run around. I love playing with anything that moves! My eyesight isn't the best so that may mean I mistake your hands and feet as toys! Watch out! I am the most confident kitten you will ever meet. Most loud noises do not phase me.I like to pounce on things and make cute squeak noises when I'm happy.
If you're looking for a playful cat that prefers doing laps around the house, jumping on everything that moves over being picked up, cuddled and sleeping a lot, then I'm your man!
Medical notes
Eyelid Agenesis, Distichiasis and Wry Mouth
Hamlet was born with multiple eyelid and jaw abnormalities that we have investigated and treated under the recommendation of a veterinary eye specialist. Hamlet was diagnosed with upper eye lid agenesis, which is a condition where part of Hamlet’s upper eye lid did not form at all.
After healing from this surgery he was diagnosed with distichiasis which means he had hairs growing along his eyelid margins that were touching his eye and causing pain and irritation. It is a rather rare condition in cats, with a genetic cause in dogs, it is unknown what causes this condition in cats. Hamlet has had further surgery to remove these hairs, called cryotherapy. Cats typically do not develop new hairs in time compared with dogs but there is a potential for this to occur in future as some hairs can lay dormant. If these hairs are continuing to cause irritation then surgery may need to be repeated.
He required removal of his left eye due to severe abnormalities which caused him significant pain and left him blind in this eye. Hamlet also required removal of both his kitten and adult teeth as he was born with a wry mouth. Wry mouth is a skeletal malocclusion in which one or more of the four quadrants of the jaw grow disproportionately to the others, resulting in improper alignment of the jaw.
Given the eye and jaw abnormalities that Hamlet was born with, it is difficult to say whether there are additional other underlying conditions that Hamlet could develop in the future. Reported cases of kittens with eyelid agenesis have been known to have a normal quality of life and generally has not been associated with other significant congenital abnormalities.
