About Coco ❤️ Bichon x Maltese x Pom (On Trial 23/8/20)
Coco is a very cute Bichon Frise x Maltese x Pomeranian, only 8 months old. This gorgeous girl needs a special home with someone who is not expecting a perfect dog and is ready to help her overcome her fears.
Coco is affectionate and playful and sweet as apple pie 🍎 with the people that she lives with. She loves to play fetch, and tug and to snuggle up with and be your very best friend.
Coco is afraid of people that she doesn't know. When strangers come to the house or she sees strangers on walks, she will tell them to stay away by barking and lunging. The best way to manage visitors is to put Coco on lead until your friend comes in and sits down. Give her treats to teach her that people coming over results in good things happening to her. She will make friends with regular visitors. Our volunteer trainer can give you more help.
Coco loves going for a walk but you need to take her to places where people or dogs aren't going to get close to her. She is not a dog you can take to the dog park, playground or shops. She needs to walk in a quiet neighbourhood at off-peak times, or in a rural setting. We haven't introduced her to any cats.
Coco has been working with a trainer and has proven to be very, very receptive to positive reinforcement training. She absolutely loves learning new things and using her brain to earn food rewards. She can sit, stay, nose target and come when called. She walks beautifully on a harness and lead in the yard but needs more practice in the more challenging environment outside of a yard. Our volunteer trainer is happy to continue to work with Coco's new family in Newcastle or Lake Macquarie. If you live outside of our area, we will recommend a trainer near you.
Coco is very much an inside girl and needs to be welcome inside, on your lap, and to sleep in your bedroom. She is housetrained. She is afraid of thunderstorms and might have an accident inside when she gets scared during the storm.
She has a gorgeous, fluffy, low-shedding coat which needs regular brushing (every few days depending on length), bathing (every few weeks). Professional clipping (needed every 4 to 6 weeks) which will cost approximately $65 and is essential to keep her comfortable and beautiful.
Coco was previously living with a couple in a retirement community and they had to surrender her because she barks when she hears sounds from outside. You can interrupt and reduce barking by consistently calling her to you then rewarding her for coming. She has been improving in foster care in quieter environment.
Coco is the size of a Shih Tzu and weighs approximately 6kgs. She is a young, active and healthy. Small dogs typically live to age 15 or 16 so you'll need to be prepared for that commitment. We want this to be her forever home.
