About Rupert
Rupert - A very special young man
Rupert came into our care as a dearly-loved member of a family who adopted him at just eight weeks of age. Sadly though, the bustling home environment with three young children didn’t suit Rupert and despite investing time with force free dog behaviourists and trying anti-anxiety medication, it was eventually decided that Rupert would ultimately be happier in a different home environment.
He came into foster care with a couple in their early thirties (no children) with two young, similar sized dogs to Rupert and this calm, predictable and structured environment - once Rupert settled into it - suited him much better. This is the kind of forever home that Rupert now seeks.
Rupert has gradually been weaned off all anti-anxiety medication. In order for him to thrive in his new home, he needs firm boundaries, structure and routine delivered in a calm and assertive manner. We are looking to re-home him in a child-free family to help facilitate the calm and predictable environment he needs. His new family need to understand that Rupert will take quite some time to build a relationship with them, and they must be prepared to manage their expectations around welcoming him into their home. Although he co-habitats with other dogs in his foster home, everyone agrees Rupert would be best suited as an ‘only child’.
As Rupert continues to out of his shell in his foster home, his funny character and silly antics have come to the fore. He loves a game of ‘keepies off’ and he’s quick to steal a sock or shoe for this bit of fun. He adores playing with his ball and rope toy and if you can sneak up on him without him knowing he’s often rolling around on his back ‘talking’ loudly and playing with the toy using his front paws.
Rupert was not appropriately socialised as a puppy or young dog. This doesn’t mean he cannot learn to be around other dogs, however he tends to become highly aroused when he does encounter them. This needs to be carefully managed as most dogs will find his lack of manners and intensity very overwhelming and this may illicit an unwanted response. His new family need to have a realistic understanding that Rupert is not at all suitable to be an ‘off-lead at the park’ kind of dog. He requires continued training and positive reinforcement to get better at meeting other dogs. His new owners will need to be confident to say to others ‘sorry, please give us space’ and this will help Rupert to develop trust and a strong bond with his owners. His foster carers have two chooks who he watches through the fence but doesn’t show any concerning behaviours towards.
Rupert loves nothing more than to cuddle up with you on the couch at night and he is sweet affection personified! He is so happy to see familiar faces that his little tail whips about, so watch those mugs on your coffee table! He tries really hard to sit for his pats but sometimes that wiggly bottom gets the better of him. Rupert travels perfectly in the car.
He is used to staying home alone for between six and eight hours during the day, and once more, this is successful so long as the routine which he has grown accustomed to is followed and he has plenty of fun and interesting enrichment toys to keep him busy. Of course he also requires a good amount of exercise morning and night.
If you are a single person or couple (who do not have children still in the home) looking to bring an incredibly intelligent, affectionate dog into your lives and are in a position to dedicate yourselves to his ongoing training and needs, please get in touch. You will be richly rewarded with a magnificently loyal, sweet little soul. ‘Rupie’ has his whole life ahead of him and he is ready to get on with living the best version of it that he possibly can.
Oh, and by the way, did we mention his looks?
