About Jersey
Jersey is the sweetest, smartest little dog, with a huge heart who is looking for a very patient and understanding owner to lead him through his life and teach him that he is safe and loved.
PLEASE READ ALL OF THIS INFORMATION BEFORE APPLYING.
Don't let the cute photos fool you - Jersey is a special needs boy.
Jersey is completely BLIND although he navigates his world so well, it is easy to forget he can’t see. Check out his videos.
You will need to be a SPECIAL KIND OF DOG OWNER. In return you will be rewarded with lots of Jersey love.
Jersey’s new owner/family will need to:
- Be patient and understanding of the special needs of a blind dog
- Be prepared to let Jersey settle into your home at his own pace and understand that pats and touch are on his terms. He will come to you, and you will be rewarded with lots of Jersey love – but he takes a while to learn to trust.
- Have no children
- Have a yard for him to explore. He is not suited for apartment living or places with insecure balconies.
- Have an existing friendly dog. He currently lives happily with 2 other dogs and is great on walks when he encounters other dogs. And he’s okay with cats but not kittens.
Preferred but not essential: Experience with vision-impaired dogs.
Jersey is the best boy because:
- Crate trained, and sleeps in his own bed during the night.
- Is easy to train – he is very clever.
- Is toilet trained and uses the doggy door.
- Will sit for meals and treats.
- Walks beautifully on lead – very confident little dog.
- Navigates his world with such confidence and numerous bumps on the head.
- Is good with other dogs of all sizes.
- He plays with his toys.
- He enjoys a walk (on-lead of course) at the dog beach.
- He eats well and will take food from your hand very gently.
Jersey had had a difficult journey. He was very nervous when he first came to us and would growl and snap. He was also very nervous of the car but he has improved so much that he now travels with the other dogs without a problem.
Over time he has come to trust his foster carers and his confidence is growing day by day and he is getting better with being touched.
Jersey tends to be more of a one-person dog as he attaches himself to one person. He currently lives with two adult foster carers. The female FC can handle him and pick him up etc, and the male carer is able to feed and walk him, but Jersey is still cautious about being touched by him. When it suits him, Jersey will jump up on the male carer’s knee and go to sleep.
Jersey needs boundaries and discipline or else he will rule your life. He is happy to obey so long as he knows the rules.
You need to know:
- Touch and contact is on Jersey’s terms – especially in the early stages. He will growl and snap if startled. He has very good body language, so it is clear if he feels uncomfortable.
- Due to his blindness he experiences some fear-based anxiety.
- He does not like being patted / touched by strangers but loves a rub on the head once he knows you.
- He can and will snap if he is cornered and scared.
- He will sometimes wake from a deep sleep and growl as he is disoriented. He has become better with this as he has settled in with his foster family. A quick shake of the treat jar or a “what’s up Jersey boy?” and he is all smiles again.
Jersey is a funny, fun loving young dog who is looking for love and security with his forever family.
Medical notes
Jersey is completely blind.
Retinal detachment in right eye and Optic nerve hypoplasia in left eye.
He is currently on Pexion and Gabapentin to control seizures that he had back in December. He has not had another turn since. This medication also helps with his fear-based anxiety.
