About Franya
Sadly Franya has been diagnosed with lymphoma. We will be keeping Franya and Fagan together during this time.
Are you a kind, compassionate quiet family who love cats and dogs who can take on Franya and Fagin? They would tell you a very sad story if they could speak.
Franny is a quiet, introverted dog. She prefers to spend most of her time sleeping wherever her humans are, and will sometimes cuddle on the couch. Mostly, she enjoys her own company, and doesn’t seem upset when we leave her alone. This is likely because she has the company of her cat brother, Fagin.
Fagin helps her anxiety and when Franny gets a little nervous, seeing Fagin instantly calms her down. Franny is more of a ‘love from afar’ dog at the moment, but is opening up more. She currently uses pee pads inside next to her friend’s kitty litter but is learning to toilet on her walks.
Franya has come from an environment where she was badly neglected and never allowed outside so she still resists going for a walk sometimes but is happy to return home. She doesn’t react visibly to other dogs on her short walks but gets quiet nervous. She is currently in an apartment and it will be easier for her to learn the toileting rules in a courtyard situation.
Franya will likely be scared when she is first moved and needs a quiet, warm place as her ‘safe’ place. If she starts shaking, it is best to give her a quick scratch or pat, then cover her body with a thin sheet or blanket and leave her with Fagin who will calm her down. Check on her periodically, but she will seek out human company when she is ready.
She has a good appetite but can get shy when people look at her when eating. She prefers her humans to go about their business (quietly) while she eats, or to eat in another room. She loves praise.
Franya likes cuddling on her own terms – usually in the mornings after she wakes up and sometimes during the night. She is ok with being carried, but you need to announce yourself first from the front, then she needs to be touched on her back first to let her know you are there, and then picked up from behind. This is likely due to her sight. She does not like being picked up from the front. She loves pats and chin scratches and ear scratches, and will tolerate a couple of gentle kisses on her head She likes her own space – she is not a lapdog and will not lick you, but she shows her affection in other ways and caring for her is very rewarding.
If she is unhappy with being touched, she will either scamper away, or lurch her head backwards (e.g. if you are giving her a kiss on the head, she will pull her head back suddenly). This is a good signal to leave her alone. She is not afraid to let you know when she loves or hates something.
Please note: our dogs are not available for interstate adoption. We also do not adopt to people under the age of 25 years.

Adoption details
We are a community fostercare network, not a shelter, and our dogs and cats are cared for in private homes. Note that we are very careful where we rehome our dogs and cats and we have an intensive process. If you want a quick turnaround we are not the group for you. If you seem like a good match for the dog of your choice we will organise a telephone chat, a meet and greet and a property check. We offer a six-week full refund, free assistance for six weeks for any issues, and a lifetime takeback policy with a fifty percent refund of the adoption fee, and of course an invitation to our adopters’ Christmas party.
We care for our dogs and cats and we want you to as well. We know that genuine applicants have no trouble with this process and understand that if we refuse you a dog or cat, it is because you are not the best match for that pet.
Our commitment to the dogs and cats in our care is total and we treat each one as if we are passing on a family pet. This may not suit you so we point out that there are equally great dogs and cats available in pounds, shelters and with other rescue groups.
