Post-Christmas pet dumpings dismay RSPCA
RSPCA spokeswoman Emily Vatkovic says the post-Christmas period is notorious for pet dumpings.
She says many owners quickly become frustrated by their new pets, and says the first year of caring for a puppy or kitten can be a trying time.
"People do need to put a bit of patience and time into it," she said.
"If that's not possible, if for whatever reason they are unable to look after the animal, we ask that they bring the animal to the RSPCA rather than just leave them dumped anywhere."
She says RSPCA volunteers are expecting to look after dozens of dumped puppies and kittens in coming weeks.
"We've also come across animals that have been left in plastic bags, boxes at rubbish tips and at bus shelters as well," she said.
"We ask that people do bring their animals to the RSPCA so we can give these animals a second chance and we can find them a second home."
