RSPCA homes for Christmas - 3,300 the target!

Staff and volunteers at RSPCA Qld have set themselves an ambitious target.

They want to re-home 3,300 animals between December 1st and February 29th. This would be 600 more than in the same period last year!

"Yes it is ambitious," admitted CEO Mark Townend. "But we're going to be pulling out all stops to make sure we don't just equal it, we exceed it!"

The RSPCA is encouraging people thinking about buying a pet over summer to come to the RSPCA first.

It is also introducing a number of new initiatives that will help with adoptions. The new "Road Home" program will be bringing shelter animals that are available for adoption out into the community.

In the past, RSPCA shelters throughout Queensland have perhaps had the unjustified reputation of being where you dumped animals, not where you purchased them.

Some people even regarded them as somewhat intimidating. This image is about to change.

"We're coming to you!" said Qld Director Shelter Operations Annette Harder. "No longer will you just be able to adopt an animal at an RSPCA shelter As often as possible we'll be bringing animals from our shelters to community events and local shopping centres. We'll be there to give you personal advice as to what animal may be suitable and help you make the correct choice for your lifestyle. The whole experience will be uplifting for staff, volunteers and the customers. Plus of course the animals will benefit from finding a loving home where they'll be cared for their entire life. That's always our ultimate goal."

At Fairfield RSPCA in Brisbane, the Shelter will also have extended opening hours and will now be open from 10am to 7pm on Fridays and Saturdays.

The advantage for animal lovers is not just convenience. All RSPCA animals have had veterinary checks, been de-sexed and been subject to behavioural tests.

They also have a VIP identification tag and have been micro-chipped. In addition they come with one month's free pet insurance, discount RSPCA retail vouchers and a 28 day trial period.

Last year nearly 32,000 abused and abandoned animals passed through RSPCA Qld shelters.
