(WA) Matching old folk, old dogs
Barney, a corgie cross aged 12, is one participant in the Dogs Refuge Home's new Seniors for Seniors program, which aims to unite older dogs with older owners.
Dog Refuge Home president Karen Rhodes said older people would like the companionship of a dog, but feel unable to make the commitment to a young dog.
"Dogs can offer older people companionship, provide a reason to get out of the house, and offer many health benefits associated with daily walking," she said.
"But it is understandable they feel unable to take on the responsibility of young dogs, so we have devised this program.
"Through it, we hope to match people with exactly the right dog and, in doing so, enable older dogs to find a good home.
