10,000 dogs rally to support RSPCA WA
An estimated 10,000 dogs, a handful of horses and ponies and one very brave cat turned out in Perth today for the 10th annual RSPCA Million Paws Walk.
The South Perth foreshore was transformed into a moving sea of pet lovers and their owners in a show of support for the animal welfare group.
The lone cat rode safely above the crowd on the back of a horse unseen by most of the canine community.
Barely a scuffle broke out between the large array of dogs, and no sign of dog droppings could be seen when the crowd had cleared.
RSPCA spokeswoman Emma-Jane Morcombe said the walk had raised in excess of $120,000 and was the most successful in the event's 10 year history.
She said the event had been moved forward from its usual date in May to make the most of the fine weather in Perth in April.
Ms Morcombe said golden retrievers and kelpies were the most popular breeds at this year's event but dogs of all shapes and sizes had taken part in the two or five kilometre walks.
"The event is all about well-loved pets and their owners stepping out in support of the work of the RSPCA in helping animals that are not so lucky," Ms Morcombe said.
Similar events will be held at capital cities around the nation next month.
