Former Queen of Pop Debra Byrne is the newly crowned queen of cats.

That's the furry, purry, feline kind of cat, and not the stage musical Cats for which she won wide critical acclaim.

The 40-year showbiz veteran lazed in slinky sleepwear yesterday, playing with Gus and Marble, strays she saved from death row.

The songstress with supreme staying power has a growing menagerie.

Gus and Marble join two other cats, three dogs, two ducks, nine ducklings, four hens, a rooster, two chicks and budgerigars, including a baby budgie.

Byrne, who lives in Melbourne's outer north, has been a passionate supporter of Pets Haven animal shelter in Woodend, which collects and rehouses dogs and cats otherwise destined to die.

Shelter owner Trish Burke said Byrne often popped in to spend time smooching and grooming abandoned pets.

"She's been very committed to the cause and has fully supported our efforts to collect animals from pounds whose adoption time-frames have expired and who face being put down," she said.

"She is obviously an animal lover from the heart because her visits are always regular and she's happy to hang around for a long time."
