All I want is a room somewhere

Some were playful, others were shy, while a few simply slept through their photo shoot yesterday.

But they all had one thing in common.

Every cat, kitten, puppy and dog at the Sippy Creek Animal Refuge (SCAR) is looking for a home to call its own.

Since the refuge opened in 1979, its countless volunteers have managed to find homes for about 30,000 animals.

SCAR will celebrate its 30th birthday on January 17 with a party to thank all the people who have donated their time over the years.

More than 80 volunteers are currently on the books.

Former four legged residents of the refuge are also invited to attend the party from 9am.

President Rosy Symons said in 30 years of operation, SCAR had only ever euthanised animals that were too sick to heal or were considered a danger to society.

"We only take what we can hold," she said.

"Once an animal enters the premises we do not euthanise, it stays here until it is homed."

The refuge managed to find homes for nearly 600 dogs and more than 400 cats last year.

Most stayed at the refuge for about three weeks before they found a home.

"What's the point of euthanising them if they don't get a home immediately? Every dog has his day, as the story goes we have cats too of course," Ms Symons said.

Ms Symons said the little dogs went "like hot cakes" as soon as they had been de sexed and micro chipped.

She said education about de sexing pets was the key to reducing the number of animals that were euthanized each year in Australia.

"People seem to be getting the message a lot more with dogs than with cats," she said.

"Cats are more independent but people need to be made responsible for them as well put the cats in at night for a start."

Anyone who would like to donate dog or cat food to SCAR can do so at any Sunshine Coast library until January 20.
