(WA) Update on the cell dogs program
Challenger TAFE in conjunction with the Department of Corrective Services and K9 Dog Rescue in Mandurah is taking part in an innovative program aimed at assisting with the rehabilitation of minimum-risk prisoners, and reducing the number of stray dogs facing euthanasia.
Approximately three dogs at a time are placed with four prisoners for a six-week obedience and training program based at Wooroloo Prison Farm.
Challenger TAFE Animal Studies lecturer, Ken Storrs, who conducts the student prisoners' assessments explained that the Wooroloo Animal Program was based on a long-running US-based initiative. Although the program is the first of its kind in Australia, there's a significant amount of evidence from Celldogs to show that running these programs is extremely worthwhile and effective - both for the dogs and the prisoners.
Cell Dogs seem to be going from strength to strength, we have now had three of our initial four dogs happily rehomed. The only remaining dog left from our initial intake is Cabernet. He is a gorgeous boy, who has responded really well to his training and would make an excellent pet.
For more information about Cabernet, or any of our other cell dogs, call either K9 or Ken Storrs on 0417 944 590.
