(WA) RSPCA applauds QLD government's Companion Animal Review

RSPCA WA is calling on the State Government to follow the lead of its Queensland counterpart and consider introducing mandatory identification and desexing of companion animals.

The Beattie Government today announced it will begin a review into its animal management legislation, including the compulsory registration and de-sexing of dogs and cats.

RSPCA Spokeswoman Marianne Ellis said mandatory sterilisation in WA would help stop the dumping of unwanted pets.

“Unfortunately we continue to see far too many surrendered, neglected animals in WA, and being a charity with very little Government funding it’s a huge burden with which our dedicated staff and volunteers have to cope.”

Last year the RSPCA rescued more than 2,000 animals and investigated more than 3,000 cruelty complaints.

“Ensuring all animals – including pets – are properly cared for will result from education, effective and progressive legislation and adequate funding of the RSPCA by Government”, said Ms Ellis.

It costs more than $4 million dollars a year to operate the RSPCA, the State Government contributes just $250,000 to help the charity.

The Queensland Government recently allocated $17 million to the local RSPCA for a capital works program. While, the Victorian Government increased its funding of the animal charity to $700,000. And, in South Australia the Government gave the RSPCA $560,000 to fund an extra two inspectors
