Mutt Dog will inspire children to be kind to unwanted dogs

Thanks to the volunteers of RSPCA Orange branch, local primary schools, libraries and the children's ward of the Orange hospital will shortly have a book that will help encourage children to be kind to unwanted dogs and to foster their love of animals. The branch has raised $300 to purchase 30 copies of "Mutt Dog", the work of award-winning writer and illustrator Stephen Michael King.

The book is endorsed by the RSPCA NSW Humane Education department and Manager Suzanne Thomas believes it will evoke feelings of empathy and warmth towards unwanted dogs.

"It's inspiring that "Mutt Dog's" main human character is a kind person who helps homeless animals and homeless people and they reward her kindness with love.

"The book also shows that any dog - whether they are a family pet or homeless - can be special."

Mutt Dog is a brave scruffy dog that is very lonely until one rainy day changes his life for the better, thanks to the kindness of a person.

The RSPCA's Orange Shelter Education Coordinator, Kaelene Heylbut said the RSPCA is indebted to the support of the branch as they invest in the future of local children and animals. She believes the book will show children it's important for animals to have a home and someone to love them.

"We hope "Mutt Dog" will educate as well as entertain the children as they await their turn at the dentist, doctor, or library or while they are in hospital," she said.

RSPCA Orange now has a busy education program, visiting around 2,000 primary school students during the past month. The RSPCA also provides education talks at the hospital.
