Gold Coast QLD - Schnauzer rescue group raises awareness

Not every dog has his wedding day

The bride was dog-ugly, the mother-in-law behaved like a perfect bitch and the groom was kept on a short leash.

You could forgive the bridal party for howling during the ceremony, and the guests for looking hot under their collars.

A Gold Coast park was the setting for a most unusual wedding yesterday the happy breeding couple were a pair of miniature schnauzers.

The stunt was held during the first meeting of the Queensland Schnauzer Club and rescue group.

The marriage was presided over by a celebrant and sealed with a rear-end sniff.

A violinist performed the bridal march as two-year-old Meg, and her groom, 11-month-old Finn, trotted down the aisle in their canine wedding attire.

Dog owner Janet Goodwin said the club was formed two months ago to help raise awareness about the special requirements of the breed.

"They are a very sought-after breed because they don't shed hair, so they are good for people with asthma," Ms Goodwin said.

"However they are a very high-maintenance pet. Some people do not realise that they need to be groomed every six weeks or their hair gets very matted, and that can become expensive."

Some owners used their dogs as temporary fashion accessories, then dumped them at the pound when they lost interest, Ms Goodwin said.

The rescue group aims to help relocate animals whose owners had abandoned them or found their upkeep too demanding.

At the weekend, it found a new home for a schnauzer whose owner was suffering from terminal cancer.
