PetRescue in 2010

PetRescue is working hard to give Australian rescue groups industry-changing opportunities whilst keeping our services free to all shelters, rescue groups and adopters.

Read on for more about the projects PetRescue has planned in 2010!

PetRescue's mission is to:

  • Elevate the status of shelter and rescue animals within the community, promoting shelters and rescues as the first and best place to go when looking to adopt a pet.

  • Significantly increase the amount of pet adoptions from shelters and rescue groups throughout Australia.

  • Decrease the amount of homeless animals in shelters/rescue through increased awareness, adoptions and preventative education.

  • Support a cooperative approach between shelters and rescue organisations in the re-homing of animals in their care, and facilitating the sharing of information and education by these groups.

  • Support a philosophy of continued learning and education by both the wider community and those directly involved in rescue, for the advancement in care and welfare of all animals.
PetRescue is working to put rescue pets into the hearts and minds of people in such a powerful way, that killing healthy, adoptable animals becomes completely unnecessary in Australia.

Current programs/media

PEDIGREE® Adoption Drive

PEDIGREE has made an enormous commitment too help support the animal rescue groups of this country.

With guidance from PetRescue, PEDIGREE will be investing $4 million into an awareness campaign designed to pull on the emotional heartstrings of all Australians and bring adoption to the masses. Incorporating TV, print and online media, the campaign is designed to highlight the plight of the thousands of dogs euthanased every year because homes can’t be found.

The PEDIGREE Adoption Drive will run from the 3rd June to the 30th July. Celebrity ambassadors Tom Williams and Myf Warhurst will launch 'Yellow Dog Day' which will see yellow dogs appear across Australian capital cities, officially kicking off the campaign.

The campaign this year doesn't only focus on awareness. For every person who joins the PEDIGREE Adoption Drive Facebook page, PEDIGREE will donate a bowl of food to a rescue group. They are also offering every single new adopted dog parent a free Adoption Kit. The campaign will also launch the Dog Adoption Index, a report into the issue of Dog Homelessness in Australia, in collaboration with PetRescue.

Visit the PEDIGREE Adoption Drive website for more information, or become a fan of the Facebook page.

PetRescue and Jetpets Interstate Flight Program

Each month, Jetpets kindly donates three interstate flights for needy pets, to overcome distance as a barrier to happiness. By connecting rescue groups with like-minded groups in other states, a safety net can be created and opportunities to move pets from places of low demand, to places of higher demand are discovered.

Rescue groups looking to become part of this program, or for more information contact PetRescue's interstate pet co-coordinator at flights@petrescue.org.au.

PetFoster

With the majority of our members operating foster care networks, one of the ongoing needs is more carers.  The PetFoster initiative markets pet foster caring to the mainstream.

Designed to link new carers with foster care groups, provide resources to existing foster care groups and to help new groups develop a program based on the experiences of successful foster groups across the country, PetFoster aims to empower a community that helps save Australia's homeless pets.

PetRescue In-Store Adoption

Working with ethical pet stores nationwide, PetRescue's In-Store Adoption Program brings pets out of cages and into the community. Giving adopters the chance to meet and interact with rescue pets, learn about responsible pet ownership and speak to an adoption advisor about how to choose the best pet for their family.

The strategy and program development has been completed over the past 18 months and after the success of the pilot events, we are now making the program available to all our members.

Groups looking to become part of this program, or looking for advice on getting their own program up and running should contact PetRescue's In-store event co-ordinator at instore@petrescue.org.au.

Where Do Puppies Come From? & Puppy Farming Awareness Week

Falling on the 19th of September, International Puppy Farming Awareness Week is the opportunity to spread the word about this cruel industry in Australia.

In conjunction with our information website 'Where Do Puppies Come From?' and our 10,000 member strong awareness group 'Australia Says No To Puppy Farms', we aim to eliminate the demand for farmed puppies by helping Australians make educated pet acquisition choices.

Community Cats/Secret Cat Society

A favourite of our Top Dog Shel, whose own Community Cat was the inspiration for the campaign, the 'Secret Cat Society' aims to improve the welfare of free-roaming cats, by empowering carers with simple steps they can take to care for their Secret Cat.

With over 40% of cat owners feeding a cat they don't own, a movement towards compassionate cat solutions exists through improved vet care, desexing rates and care for these misunderstood animals.

Visit www.communitycats.com.au to find out more, and email info@petrescue.com.au to request some Secret Cat posters.

Major programs in 2010

PetRescue V3

Although the PetRescue website has been our greatest tool in getting rescue pets into the public eye, the site itself is 5 years old and built on technology that is no longer holding up to the demand. Because of our rapidly expanding user groups (10,000 visitors a day, 650 active rescue groups and around 3,900 animals listed at any one time), PetRescue.com.au urgently needs a complete architectural redesign and rebuild.

The redevelopment of PetRescue is an enormous undertaking and we estimate an eight-month build with a cost of just over $100,000. We'll will be seeking major sponsorship, grants and donations for the redevelopment.

Cat adoption campaign viral

Cat ownership is in decline and we believe that this trend must be reversed. In 2010 PetRescue will be working in conjunction with PIAS (the Petcare Information & Advisory Service) to create the first of many programs and campaigns to elevate the status of cats in our society.

A campaign launched through PetRescue's large email database and social media networks will use viral marketing to bring cats into the spotlight.

PetRescueTV

Most groups consider seminars and workshops unaffordable luxuries, but these are the very things that can help us improve our capabilities and make a positive difference to the way we work. PetRescueTV will be a way for every person involved in rescue to access new ideas, international successes and practical solutions. We'll be recording conferences, interviewing leaders in rescue and including international content - and it will all be accessible via videos on PetRescueTV.

Social Media Solutions

At PetRescue we understand the importance of the changing face of media and marketing from the previous 'broadcast' role, to a direct relationship with those who support and believe in our organisation's goals.

Social media's role in animal welfare cannot be underestimated, and as free tools, they are ideal for the hundreds of struggling groups to reach supporters and adopters.

In 2010 PetRescue will not only be continuing to build the reach of our own organisation through social media, but will bring the best tools and techniques to support our members groups.

Each month over 1,000 PetRescue pets are posted by Facebook and Twitter users, reaching thousands of more potential adopters. Let your supporters know about this fantastic PetRescue feature and watch them promote your adoptees to the world.
