Hole in the wall gang saves Cobby the kitten

FIREFIGHTERS and a wildlife rescuer were forced to use jackhammers and boltcutters to save Cobby the kitten who was stuck in a wall cavity for more than seven hours.

The three-month-old's owners, Emily Guy, 25, and her mother, Wendy, found their cat had become trapped between the wall of their Middle Park home and their neighbour's house after going exploring.

"It was awful - I was devastated because I didn't think they would get him out," Ms Guy said.

"When they got him out, I just held him in my arms and he just shivered."

Cobby became stuck at 6pm on Friday and was finally freed at 1.30am yesterday with the help of animal rescuer Nigel Williamson after firefighters' initial four-hour attempt failed.

Mr Williamson brought extra equipment and made a second hole in the wall before calling back the firefighters who used their strength to cut the 16mm-thick steel rods in the wall, which made the cat's exit possible.

The animal rescuer said it was the hardest case he had undertaken in his 23 years of saving animals from dangerous situations.

Port Melbourne station officer David Williams echoed the rescuer's sentiment, saying it was his longest cat rescue .
