Poco the dog loves to snuggle

Poco is a rat terrier mix I adopted from the Animal Rescue League in January 2004. He arrived at the shelter as a stray with an estimated age of 2 years.

I'm an ARL volunteer, and I first saw him one December evening as I was walking dogs and cleaning kennels in the main shelter. He was in one of the lower level small kennels, and the staff had dubbed him Biscuit after the little black-and-white dog in the comic strip.

I noticed him watching me intently as I went in and out. A staff member told me, "Biscuit just likes to cuddle," so I went over and opened his kennel door. He immediately snuggled in against me and I was hooked.

When I came back later the next day, he was gone, and I assumed he had been adopted. A month later, as I was walking through the large kennels on my way to Pup Camp, I looked down into a corner kennel and there he was, looking up at me with those sweet, soulful eyes. It turned out he had been moved into medical because of an ear infection and was up for adoption once again.

I knew it was meant to be. After an introduction to my Siberian husky, Tasha, I adopted Biscuit that same day.

I renamed him Poco, Spanish for "a little bit." Looking at him next to Tasha, the name seems appropriate. Someone had apparently house trained him, and he adapted to his new home quickly.

We enrolled in the ARL's Good Manners class that spring, and he proved to be a quick study and eager to please.

It took a bit of time for Tasha to adjust to a new dog in the house, but Poco has agreed to let her be in charge, so they are now a great team. In the back yard, Poco is a serious little hunter, stalking everything that moves while Tasha watches in admiration. But in the house, he's the sweetest little lap dog of all time.

He's a perfect addition to our household and a wonderful companion for both Tasha and me.
