Cat adoption success tips for PetRescue profiles
With phrases such as “man’s best friend” and a new book titled, "Why Dogs Are Better Than Cats” it’s perhaps little wonder why cats are being left behind in the adoption stakes. We at PetRescue HQ want to change all that, and this year will be looking at many ways to help improve cat adoptions for all our cat rescue groups.
The first step was to do some research with cat lovers and those looking to adopt, to find out what attracts them to a cat and what makes some cats listed on PetRescue more likely to be adopted than others. From the results we have come up with 4 simple tips that could make all the difference to your adoptions (and even a cheat sheet to get you started on great profiles).
1. Attractive profile photos.
Never underestimate the importance of the profile photo, this is the most effective tool you have to attract adopters to find out more about your cat.
Our research has found that if kitty is photographed whilst looking directly at the camera, or, is photographed in 'play' mode (e.g. playing with a toy), they will attract a far greater number of profile visits. Also, if you have the ability to remove ‘red eyes’ within the photograph – please do, as this will obviously make kitty look more appealing. (NB. No more photoshopping after this though!)
If you're not the best photographer in the world, recruit a volunteer who is. Ask at the local Uni, photography club or advertise in the PetRescue volunteer section. A great pic can literally save a cats life.
2. Highlight the most sought-after qualities
Affectionate, playful, loving, cute, cuddly and friendly, have been identified as the most 'sought-after' cat qualities (in that order). So, if any of those words are true to kitty's personality – make sure to include them in their profile!
3. Focus on kitty's personality - there is a different type for everyone.
There is no need to describe kitty's appearance – visitors can see it all in the profile photo, and anyway, beauty is only skin deep, so write about what matters most – kitty's personality!
Although each cat is unique our research suggests that generally there are six obvious cat personality types - each of which will be attractive to different types of adopters.
1. Low Alert - Just Chillin'
2. High Alert - The Investigator
3. Anti-social - Mr / Miss Independent
4. Very social - Social Butterfly
5. Steady - Cool Calm and Collected
6. Unpredictable - No two days the same!
Each personality type can be endearing to the right owner and writing a positive profile highlighting them will help you find Kitty find the perfect home. For inspiration we've written some examples profiles using the six personality types, paired with different ages and including the most sort-after qualities! Cat Profiles
4. Be professional.
Remember that despite your not-for-profit operation, you are still running a business. One of the most common complaints from potential adopters is not being emailed back or not knowing if they have left a message with the right person.
Simple things like answering your phone with your group's name, instead of just a “Hello?” will ensure the potential adopter is onside from the beginning. Similarly, if you’re unable to get to your phone, ensure your answering machine message mentions your groups name.
