How to take a fabulous pet profile pic

When you think about it, a photo is a pet's ticket into the hearts of their potential adoptive family. So it pays to take the time to make your pet photos really pop!
A fantastic photo which captures the pet’s charm, creates an instant emotional response and is the fundamental way to connect with potential adopters. Never underestimate the importance of a engaging photo!
One of the best ways to get great photo is to engage a professional (or enthusiastic amateur!) photographer to volunteer to lend a hand. Many animal loving happy-snappers enjoy giving up their time to help find pets homes, so put out a call to your community or social networks to find a volunteer or two!.
But it is possible for anyone to get a great pet profile photo simply by following our easy how-to guide.
How to take a fabulous pet profile pic
Making them sparkle: Dogs have white smiles and sleek shiny coats. They benefit hugely from being out of the kennels and in the sunlight where potential adopters can see them really gleam. Set your dog up on grass, a plain wall, blanket or bed; these are much more attractive than a dirty floor, wire mesh or yesterdays washing.

Nice to meet you: Your photo should be taken front on, with the pet facing the camera. Tether the dog and use a treat or toy to get their attention focused on you. By having the dog make eye contact with the camera, you’ll create an emotional connection, while if you can capture a happy relaxed face (mouth open and smiling) your dog will look super friendly. A quick run around to create a happy dog does this nicely.

Make me look fabulous, darling: Presentation is everything! Put an attractive coloured, clean collar or bandana on your dog (rumour has it, red or pink is the best). And sometimes it’s fun to include a favourite a toy or comfy bed in the picture.

Don’t flash me! As you’re working in a well lit area, avoid using your camera’s flash. It can create harsh shadows and reflective, alien eyes.

Beware a black hole: When photographing dark coloured dogs, use a contrasting background colour (such as a cream couch or white sand) and work to get enough light to highlight their eyes and smile.

Uploading your images for the PEDIGREE Adoption Drive Pet Pages
Dog images can only be used in the PEDIGREE Adoption Drive Pet Pages newspaper features if they are of a good resolution, so make sure you upload an image that is at least 1,000 pixels wide (the PetRescue website will resize them automatically).
Happy snapping!
