To end RSPCA Awareness Week on a high note, RSPCA Qld launches its Summer Re-homing program with a special “Adoptathon” this Saturday October 7th at Shelters all over Queensland. With the theme of this year’s Awareness Week being “It’s up to you”, it will now be up to the general public to choose a pet from the RSPCA instead of alternative sources such as pet shops and newspaper advertisements. All nine Queensland shelters will be full to the brim with animals needing caring, loving homes.
In Brisbane, the RSPCA’s Fairfield Shelter will have well over one hundred animals up for adoption and Dakabin Shelter is also full. Cats, kittens, dogs, puppies, ducks, geese, turkeys and chickens are all looking for homes.
Staff and volunteers have set them selves an ambitious target for the summer. They want to re-home more than 4,400 animals, which would be up by 500 on last year and up by 2,000 on the year before.
“Yes it is ambitious,” admitted Director of Shelter Operations Annette Harder. “But we’re going to be pulling out all stops to make sure we don’t just equal it, we exceed it! We’re encouraging people thinking about buying a pet over summer to come to the RSPCA first.”
The Road Home program which was launched last year will also play a pivotal role. It brings shelter animals that are available for adoption out into the community by attending local events, shows and day outs.
By choosing to buy an animal from the RSPCA you receive personal, professional advice as to what animal may be suitable for your living environment and lifestyle.. The whole experience is uplifting for staff, volunteers and customers. Plus of course the animals benefit from finding a loving home where they’ll hopefully be well cared for their entire life.
The advantage for animal lovers is not just convenience. All RSPCA animals have had veterinary checks, been de-sexed and, if they’re adult dogs, been subject to behavioural tests. They also have a VIP identification tag and have been micro-chipped. In addition they come with one month’s free pet insurance, discount RSPCA retail vouchers and a 28 day trial period.
All Shelters will be open extended trading hours:
