Must see Australian "dogumentary" launches

When most people think of animal cruelty, they don't necessarily think of puppies.

But that's exactly what William Wolfenden's documentary is about. The Sydney filmmaker and dog lover was inspired to make The Puppy Mill after talking with documentary makers in the US about the exploitation of the animals.

"I came back and started speaking to people here and found out we have a similar thing to puppy farms," he says.

"I'm a dog lover myself so felt compelled to tell the story. There's a huge ignorance in the community about the issue."

He says the dogs are being bred in unhygienic environments and are not socialised.

"It's just the production of dogs and how they're treated as a product and how we look at them as part of the family and life - yet they're abused behind the scenes." he says.

"They are like battery hens."

"They're over-bred and their condition is totally diminished. Bitches are made to breed two or three times a year and a dog can't recover that fast from delivering pups."

The film also looks at the bond between man and dog. Visit the The Puppy Mill website for more information.
