Foster carers save lives

Epping couple happy to save a dog's life

EVER heard of a dog that likes to watch television just as much as lazing about in the sun?

What about a dog that cowers with fear if thunder strikes and runs to you for comfort? Well that's Joey, a 7-year-old Jack Russell-cross.

His company has made the world of difference to temporary foster carers, Taisia and Matthew Autran of Epping.

Joey's life was saved by Rigbys Rescue, a Melbourne-based group of volunteers who rescue abandoned dogs from Victorian pounds.

Rigbys Rescue places dogs such as Joey into a safe environment while they search for a permanent home and provide veterinary work such as desexing, microchipping and rehabilitation.

Joey is the first dog Mr and Mrs Autran have welcomed into their home after volunteering to become foster carers. The couple shifted from an apartment to a house to be able to care for pets in need.

Mrs Autran said that being a foster carer was important because it saved dogs' lives.

And what about saying goodbye to Joey when he finds a permanent home?

"I know I'm going to cry but it's the best thing for him. I'll be happy for him because I'll be able to help another dog after Joey," she said.
