Adult pets looking for happy home
I love animals so much. I am by no means a big animal rights activist nor am I a vegetarian or anything like that but I do care a great deal about animals, especially household pets being treated right.
I recently was looking online at little Welsh Corgi dogs, being I fell in love with one at a pet store a while back. While online, I noticed that there are so many Web sites dedicated to the rescue of not only Corgi's but every breed of dog and cat known to man.
It breaks my heart to know that many people turn to breeders or pet stores when looking for a new furry friend and not to shelters and rescue programs.
Back at home in Crystal Lake, I have a beautiful dog that is a German Sheppard Rottweiler mixed breed named Maya. I call her Princess. I am proud to admit she is spoiled rotten and she deserves to be because although abandoned by her previous family, she has the most cheerful disposition I've ever come across in a dog.
She was underweight when she came home to live with me. I am happy to report that today she is chubby and happy as ever in her new home.
The sad part is that many dogs do not find happy homes to live in once they have been given up, especially the older dogs.
How can I look at cute little Corgi puppy pictures when there are thousands of adult dogs out there unable to enjoy the benefits of living with a family?
Reading stories online of dogs who have been given up for practically no reason (the family had to move and they could not bring the dog) pulls at my heartstrings.
I do not understand how families can just leave a pet behind.
Think of the qualities you look for in a friend. You want someone who is loyal, someone who will defend you, someone who will go to places with you and someone you can trust to be there for you any time, day or night.
Well, I can tell you that pets are loyal. Maya would defend me to the death if someone tried to attack me.
When I got attacked at a bar this past summer, most people stood back and watched it happen. Even some of my friends were frozen in shock and did not jump in to help right away.
There are times when I just feel like going for a walk in the woods in my backyard, or laying out in the sun reading a book and I would like some company.
I can not always get my friends to drop whatever plans they already had to join me but Maya is always willing to go on a walk or sit outside with me and play catch.
I don't want to sound like I am saying that pets should replace people in your life, I just think people should give their household pets a little more credit and make them more of a priority in their lives.
I urge anyone out there who is looking for a pet to not just stick with breeders and pet stores. Please do not even limit yourself to one breed of dog just because it is so cute - give mutts a second glance.
Please take the time to look online and visit shelters and humane societies. Many potentially great companions will never be given a chance.
There are many adult pets out there that deserve a good home. These beautiful amazing animals deserve to have care from an owner who loves and values them.
