Thanks to you Victorian shelter pets have a brighter future

Back in April we asked for your help to send a message to the Victorian government to defend community rescue and foster care groups and their work saving the lives of homeless and abandoned pets.

In just five days more than 2,000 animal lovers gave a voice to needy pets, by adding your name to our recommendations to the Department of Primary Industries. This submission helped form the new Code of Practice which would become the blueprint for rescue in the state.

We’re pleased to report that the state government listened to community feedback and has made changes around the foster care provisions in the Code. These changes allow shelters to work freely with foster carers and removed restrictions which forced shelters to kill pets after arbitrary time limits.

This is a big win for pets.

Not only does it acknowledge the vital and significant contribution community rescue and foster care groups make in the modern animal sheltering model, but it obligates high kill shelters to fully implement comprehensive foster care programs to save all healthy and treatable pets.

Check out Vix talking to the 7PM Project about modern sheltering practices and the innovative programs which are ensuring pound and shelter pets get a second chance at happiness.

A huge thank you for your help in standing up for homeless pets and the amazing rescuers working to save them!
