Community cats; positive solutions to an age old problem

.

So you were cleaning out your garage and behind all the boxes and tools you find a stray cat and her litter of kittens. What do you do? Should you call your council or your local pound? Should you contact an animal welfare group or just try and move her from your property?

Right now all over Australia people are faced with making this difficult decision. It is peak kitten season and pounds and rescue groups are at their capacity. Most councils are unable to assist, many pounds only offer euthanasia for untame strays and rescue groups tend to be extremely full, meaning there are very few available avenues for people who have found a  cat. So what can you do to help this little family?

Many ordinary people across the nation have proven is that they can create a positive solution for these owner-less cats, by thinking compassionately.

Who are these cats and why have they moved in at my place?

Known as 'Community Cats' these free-roaming animals rely on the care of humans, living near to sources of food and shelter. They patrol the urban environment, enjoying regular meals from kind animal lovers and hanging out behind your local takeaway or supermarket, keeping rodent numbers under control. Urban communities can have hundreds of these cats all helping keep the balance, performing a natural pest control service, keeping rats and mice in check and maintaining a shy distance from strangers.

But 40% of cat owners have already introduced themselves to their Community Cat, offering them regular meals and keeping an eye on their welfare. These compassionate people secretly feed this unowned cat, trying to help, but unsure of the best way to proceed. They don't want to see this healthy, untame cat die in a shelter, but also don't want to contribute to the thousands of kittens born every year.

What's the secret to helping cats?

The Secret Cat Society was formed to offer support to the huge number of people who want to see these cats live the very best life possible. Offering a series of simple steps, cat lovers can make a contribution to cat welfare that positively and practically helps cats in the community.
