'Tis the season to be social -- and Dogs' Homes of Tasmania is hoping people will get social with a dog this summer.

They are asking Tasmanians to consider adopting a dog over the holiday period because this is the ideal time of year for man's best friend to find a new home.
With the frenzy of Christmas behind us, Dogs' Homes spokeswoman Anne Boxhall said the summer holiday period was generally when people were spending more time at home.
"Dogs are social creatures, just like us," Ms Boxhall said.
She said an adopted dog would prefer to enter a new home at a time when it could adjust to the household.
"During the holiday period it's easier to establish the daily routines of care and exercise, making life less stressful all round," she said.
"The warmer summer weather assists in building a strong and lasting bond by providing many more opportunities for people and dogs to get outside for some fun and training games together."
She said dogs could gradually be encouraged to adjust to the normal household routine when others returned to work and school.
"Starting with short periods alone and slowly building up to longer periods will ease the stress for the dog, particularly when provided with chew toys and other boredom busters," she said.
Dogs' Homes of Tasmania is preparing to celebrate its 60th anniversary in 2010, and will celebrate its diamond anniversary with a year-long adoption drive.
