Walkies paws for thought

Walking your dog can help you sniff out more friends, a WA study has found.

University of WA researcher Lisa Wood uncovered many examples of animal ownership leading to greater social interaction, stronger community ties, and improved health and wellbeing.

Results of her study have gone into a 61-page handbook, Living Well Together, that will be launched in Canberra this week.

Owning a pet "was a real icebreaker," Dr Wood said. "It's a bit like a baby in a pram.

"There seems to be a ripple effect where people connect with others who have pets. Pets can have a positive influence on a sense of community."

The City of Stirling has capitalised on this with its Follow My Lead program to encourage seniors, women and young people to become more physically active through walking dogs.
