(NSW) Pet Shop Bill needs your help!

NSW moves to restrict sales of dogs and cats (source: The Age)

Cr Moore, also an independent lower house MP, last week reintroduced the Animals (Regulation of Sale) Bill to NSW Parliament.

The legislation proposes to ban the sale of cats and dogs in pet shops and markets, and allow only rescuers, pounds and recognised breeders to sell animals.

Cr Moore said she introduced the bill because of community concern about impulse pet purchases and the cruel mass breeding of companion animals.

Dogs Victoria chief executive Elizabeth White said "putting little puppies in a shop window is a frightening environment".

"Impulse buying is a huge bother," she said. "But many pet shop owners are fantastic, they take the pets home at night, don't display them in the window."

Ms White said there was ignorance about the puppy supply chain.

"We need to do more in educating people that there are social implications in the choice of dog and where they buy them," she said. "I relate it to the Fairtrade coffee movement or the anti-sweatshop campaign.

"People have to start making ethical choices."
