Help save pets from death row

After being only hours away from death, some of the residents of Wags 2 Whiskers Boarding Kennels are thankful to be alive.

The shelter, which has been operating since before Christmas, takes in dogs and cats saved from the pound by various rescue groups in the area.

Jill Clinch said the animals were saved from the pound on the last day before they are put to sleep.

“We keep them until they get a home,” she said.

“We have jack russells, cattle dogs, greyhounds, german shepherds, labs, just about everything.”

The shelter usually holds around 100 dogs at all times, as well as about six to 12 cats.

The longest they have had an animal for is six months.

“The biggest problem we have is getting people to know we’re here,” Ms Clinch said.

“We also like to make sure that they go to the right family.”

Potential owners can come out to the shelter in Londonderry every day between 9am and 4pm to see the available animals.

If after having a look, however, they have not found what they are looking for, they can visit http://www.petrescue.com.au, which lists links to other rescue groups in the country with animals available, or the shelter can put them on to other rescue groups.

Ms Clinch said it was important for these animals to be saved.

“People don’t realise that if dogs go to the pound and are not (micro)chipped, they only get seven days until they’re destroyed,” she said. “If they are chipped, they get 14 days.

“We monitor the different pounds’ websites and if any dogs or cats are up to be destroyed, we do our best to save them.”

Wags 2 Whiskers also occasionally take in surrendered pets.
