20,000 pets saved from death row

20,000 homeless pets facing a death sentence have found loving new homes thanks to a service that matches pets to families via the internet.

PetRescue a centralised database of animals available at shelters, last week saw the adoption of their 20,000th pet.

Rapidly growing to receive over 2 million visitors a year, the site has helped rescues across the country increase adoptions by doubling and often tripling the number of potential adopters vying for their animals.

But sadly, it’s not all good news.

It’s estimated that despite the best efforts of rescue, hundreds of thousands of pets are killed in Australia each year.

“We’re working to put rescue pets into the hearts and minds of people in such a powerful way, that killing healthy, adoptable animals becomes completely unacceptable” says PetRescue’s Vickie Davy.

“If people take a moment to think about their own dogs and cats, and then think about the estimated 4,000 friendly, family pets killed in Australia each week, I think clearly adoption is the only responsible option”.

PetRescue prides itself on showcasing the wide range of pets that end up in rescue. “There tends to be a misconception in the community that these pets are all abused or faulty, when nothing could be further from the truth” says Vickie.

“Most pets end up in rescue because of relationship breakdowns, people losing their house or moving into retirement homes, or simply because their owner wasn’t committed to actually owning a real-live pet.”

Farley the tiny Chihuahua cross (pictured here with his brother Charlie) was lucky number 20,000.  Farley was one of 42 Chihuahua’s rescued by NSW Animal Rescue from a home in Sydney.   Both Farley and Charlie have been adopted through PetRescue and are now happily with their new families.

PetRescue features over 2,000 pets of all breeds and types on the site at any one time and is updated daily.

Vickie smiles “we’re absolutely sure that you’ll be as hooked on rescue pets as we are, once you visit PetRescue”
