Breeders told 'for every dog you breed, you kill a shelter dog's chances'

New York - As American Kennel Club (AKC) members drive through the Lincoln Tunnel for an event at Madison Square Park this weekend, the first thing they'll see is a giant billboard attacking their greedy business--a business that PETA says should take responsibility for the deaths of homeless animals in shelters nationwide. The billboard features a "pound pup" peering sadly through the bars of a shelter cage next to the tagline "Breeders Kill Shelter Dogs' Chances. Always Adopt. Practice Animal Birth Control." PETA is launching its national Animal Birth Control (ABC) campaign in the city now to coincide with the AKC gathering. The billboard is located at the New York end of the Lincoln Tunnel, 15 feet east of Dyer Avenue, and can also be viewed at PETA.org.

Animal shelters can't compete with breeders' ads and promotions. Every time someone buys a purebred dog or cat from a breeder or pet store instead of adopting from an animal shelter or a breed rescue group, a shelter animal loses his or her chance at finding a home. With all the animals sitting on death row in the nation's animal shelters, there is no excuse for subsidizing dog profiteers instead of saving a homeless dog's life. Every year, while breeders churn out more litters, 6 million to 8 million dogs and cats are abandoned at animal shelters--and roughly half of them (an estimated 33,000 in New York City alone) must be euthanized because there simply aren't enough good homes.

"Mean people breed dogs, and nice people adopt: Pet shops and professional breeders are responsible for bringing more dogs and cats into a world where millions die in animal shelters every year for want of a home," says PETA Director Daphna Nachminovitch. "The simple fact is that if you breed or buy even one puppy or kitten, an equally deserving animal must be put to death. Shame on the AKC for its undeniable role in the deaths of homeless animals."
